The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has publicly disclosed its 15-member PAK Test Squad for the forthcoming two-match Test series against the West Indies. This series is essential for Pakistan to maintain its position in the ICC World Test Championship standings, given the substantial modifications to the composition.
Openers Recalled
Imam-ul-Haq and Mohammad Huraira have been reinstated to the squad, replacing the ailing Saim Ayub and the struggling Abdullah Shafique. Imam’s most recent appearance was during the 2023 Test series against Australia, during which he was criticized for his defensive batting strategy. Nevertheless, Imam has the chance to reclaim his position, as Saim is currently unavailable due to an ankle injury and Abdullah’s performances have been subpar.
Uncapped Players Join the PAK Test Squad
Fast bowler Kashif Ali and wicketkeeper-batter Rohail Nazir have earned their maiden Test call-ups.
- Kashif Ali impressed with a standout performance in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, claiming seven wickets in two matches. His form continued against Sri Lanka ‘A,’ where he took 5-31 in a four-day game.
- Rohail Nazir has been a consistent performer in domestic cricket and steps in as a backup for Mohammad Rizwan, following an injury to Haseebullah Khan.
Strengthening the Spin Department in PAK Test Squad
Pakistan has opted for a spin-heavy squad, recalling Sajid Khan and Abrar Ahmed.
- Sajid Khan rejoins after a stellar performance against England, where he, alongside Noman Ali, took 39 wickets in the series.
- Abrar Ahmed, known for his “mystery spin,” returns after missing recent series.
Noman Ali also retains his spot, forming a crucial spin trio with Sajid and Abrar.
Skipper and Core Players Retained
Despite Pakistan’s recent 2-0 loss in South Africa, Shan Masood continues to serve as captain. Vice-captain Saud Shakeel, along with key players like Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Salman Ali Agha, retain their places.
