The opening match of the Cricket World Cup hosts India promises to be a blockbuster, as they face off against Australia, who have won the tournament five times.
India clinched World Cup glory in 1983 and 2011, particularly memorable as it was hosted in India during their last triumph. Since then, they have secured only one ICC title, the 2013 Champions Trophy in England. India is eager to break their trophy drought on home soil.
Australia, on the other hand, is the most successful ODI team, having claimed victory in the 1987, 1999, 2003, 2007, and 2015 competitions. They stand alone as the sole team to secure three consecutive ODI titles.
For India's bowling attack, the anticipated leaders are Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, accompanied by wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav and left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja, who are automatic selections. All-rounder Hardik Pandya slots in as the third pacer.
India boasts an impressive batting lineup on paper, featuring world cricket superstars. Virat Kohli is on the brink of breaking Sachin Tendulkar's all-time ODI centuries record, while skipper Rohit Sharma is determined to make up for missing out on the 2011 tournament.
After winning the series against Australia 2-1 in the third ODI two weeks ago,
Sharma commented,
"In the last few games [against Australia and at the Asia Cup], we have been challenged across different conditions and against different opposition. We have played really well in these games. We have a good squad, and we understand how we want to use it during the World Cup. It will be about keeping our minds and bodies fresh across the next 1 1/2 months."
In contrast, Australian batsmen have substantial experience in Indian conditions, with many of them connected to Indian Premier League franchises. Notable names like David Warner, Steve Smith, Cameron Green, Mitchell Marsh, Marcus Stoinis, and Glenn Maxwell have spent considerable time playing in India.
Australia's bowling attack will be spearheaded by pacers Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc, while wrist-spinner Adam Zampa has enjoyed success in Indian conditions, with 27 wickets in 16 matches at an average of 30.77.
Australian skipper Pat Cummins noted on Saturday that his team prefers a more subdued approach, differing from the highly aggressive style of previous Australian sides.
He stated,
"Our guys are pretty chilled out, so I am always proud saying the players out there in the field are similar to who they are off the field."
