The New Zealand cricket board has confirmed that the Kiwis will travel to Pakistan to play two test matches in a bilateral series. The Pakistan-New Zealand test series 2022-23 will be an integral part of the World Test Championship 2021-23, and New Zealand will play its final stage Test Championship series in Pakistan after being eliminated from the competition in order to retain the trophy they won against India in Southampton in 2021. The Pakistan vs. New Zealand test series 2022-23 will begin with the first test on December 26 at the National Bank Cricket Arena in Karachi, followed by the second test on January 3 at the Multan Cricket Stadium. New Zealand will return to Pakistan for a test series after a 20-year absence. The last time New Zealand played a test series in Pakistan was in 2002.
Williamson’s decision to resign while still a member of the Test team surprised the international cricket community. Williamson’s tenure as Test captain will be remembered as a triumph after leading the team to victory in the first World Test Championship (WTC) match against India in 2021.
Following Kane Williamson’s resignation, New Zealand right-handed pacer Tim Southee will take over as captain of the New Zealand test team. Southee’s first mission as a leader will be in Pakistan the following year. Southee will lead a restructured team that will be missing partner fast bowlers Kyle Jamieson (back injury) and Trent Boult (absence), as well as experienced spin bowler Ish Sodhi and white-ball specialist Glenn Phillips. Tom Latham, Canterbury’s opening batsman, has been named vice-captain for the Test match after previously captaining the team without Williamson.
Babar Azam, on the other hand, will lead the Pakistan squad against the Black Caps. Currently, Babar Azam is ranked second in the ICC Test player rankings in the batting group, while Tim Southee is ranked 16th in the bowling group. In terms of ICC rankings, New Zealand is ranked fifth, while Pakistan is ranked sixth, so there is no significant difference in ranking.
So, in the upcoming Pak vs NZ test series 2022-23, it will be interesting to see how New Zealand performs on Pakistani soil after 20 years under the leadership of a new captain.
