The 2022 FIFA World Cup will be the 22nd FIFA World Cup and will be an international association football competition between the men’s national teams of FIFA’s member associations. The event runs from November 20 to December 18, 2022, in Qatar. The 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan was the second World Cup staged exclusively in Asia. This World Cup is the first to be contested in the Arab world.  The 2018 FIFA World Cup final saw France defeat Croatia 4-2 to retain their title.

Due to the field expanding to 48 teams for the event in 2026, this tournament will be the last to include 32 participant teams. The tournament’s matches will take place in eight locations spread across five cities. This World Cup is being hosted in November and December because to the extreme summer heat and humidity in Qatar. It will be performed during a shorter 29-day period. At Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor, the opening match was between Qatar and Ecuador. Qatar fell 2-0 in their first-ever World Cup match, making history as the first host nation to drop their first game.  The grand final will take place on December 18, 2022.

The decision to have Qatar host the World Cup has been the subject of significant debate, including criticisms of Qatar’s human rights record, particularly their treatment of migrant workers and stance on LGBT issues, which have given rise to claims of sportswashing. Others have claimed that Qatar’s harsh environment and weak football culture are indicators of FIFA corruption on a larger scale and of bribery for hosting rights.

Numerous nations, clubs, and players plan to boycott the game, and former FIFA President Sepp Blatter has stated on two occasions that awarding Qatar the hosting rights was a “mistake.” The attendance figures for the games have also come under scrutiny because, despite games with obvious empty seats, the reported crowd attendance has consistently exceeded stadium capacities. The tournament’s hosting in Qatar has been defended by current FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
